Ahh welcome Fall! It seems like everywhere you go there is a pumpkin infused something on the menu. Enjoy it while you can, because this too will pass. Just a few weeks ago, we spent time in St. Augustine retreating and enjoying the Florida beach and good solid Bible teachings by Linda Wolfe. I wanted to recap a few things that stuck out to me, that may serve as a good reminder for all of us!
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the woman who trusts in Him! Psalm 34:8
Our theme verse for the weekend. Tasting. Seeing. God. The result? He is good. I trust Him. I am blessed. Pretty simple.
Taste is the key to nourishment and enjoyment. (My foodie self will attest to that!) Think about it, you’re enjoying a delicious meal at a fancy restaurant, you’ve been looking forward to it all day, and skipped lunch just to enjoy the meal all the more AND THEN… about half-way through dinner, you find a hair in your food. Gross. It completely was out of place and disrupted the enjoyment of your whole meal. Even if you continued to eat it, it wouldn’t be as enjoyable. And suddenly, you lost your appetite. (We’ve all experienced this before. Right?) Taste.
What about tasting spiritually? What are you feasting on? How does it taste? Is there something disrupting your appetite? Did you find a little piece of apathy, sin, self-pity, guilt, fear, anger… and you suddenly lost your appetite?
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Matthew 5: 6
A good reminder for us, to guard ourselves that our spiritual appetite remains hungry and strong for Him. What about the dry times, when just like the fall, the your heart begins to change? Slowly you adapt to the cold, bitter, lonely air that leaves you in despair?
Not for a moment, will He forsake me. He never has. He never will. Ever.
God is able to stir up the appetite for Him in your heart. “How sweet are Your Words to my taste? Sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Psalm 119:103 Return to what you know, do not depart from Him. Remember His promise, first you take the initiave: Draw near to God. The guaranteed result: He WILL draw near to you. That’s His promise. Test it out and see that it really works!
In America, we have an over abundance of food. We taste everything. There is ONE thing we will never taste…
“We see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the author of their salvation perfect through sufferings.” Hebrews 2:9-10
We were blessed this retreat to be taught and reminded of the truths of God and His Word. I pray this is an encouragement to you, to maintain that healthy appetite you have for Him!
One last thing she mentioned that stuck with me….
God loves you right where you are, just the way you are. BUT God loves you too much to leave you just where you are.
