R.E.S.T

As I sit here thanking the Lord for His tender provisions for me this past year, I open my Bible and devote a moment of my time and heart to Him. Hebrews chapter 4 & 5 is where I’m at in scripture. I’m captured by the depth of the love of Christ upon His children that my heart is yearning for more- more than the ordinary “devotions” but rather a severe longing to know more of Him. To seek the depths and the riches that are possessed in His truth alone….
Only a few hours into 2012, and here the world awaits the future that unfolds before us. For most, happiness is hinged upon false hopes and insincere commitments to resolutions that inevitably spiral down to discontentment and unhappiness. You see, nothing in this world promotes rest, hope, or joy. Rest is a topic that is covered quite favorably in the scriptures- not laziness, but R-E-S-T. The very things we Christian women lose touch of, and an essential part of our testimony the Lord wants to use to show the world Jesus. With work, kids, laundry, errands, school, events, activities etc… I confess- balancing rest amidst that is either almost impossible or the sense of guilt overwhelms your heart since there is SO much to do! As I’ve read the scripture, I confess that mindset is contrary to the Word and (I’d like to add) GRIEVING to the Lord!

Let’s go back to basics, Hebrews 4: 8-13, “For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

“But I have a few more things to do before I can sit and rest”, “What about the ministry/ kids/ school, whose going to do _________? Let me do this first & then I’ll rest”… Ladies, we know this: Delayed obedience is disobedience. Even the God of the universe, before time – set for us an example you follow. He rested and ceased from working. Was there just nothing left for Him to do? Was He tired and needed the rest? Western Christianity tends to compartmentalize God, often relating His abilities to our feeble human capacities; and we are so wrong! God rested that we would have the example to follow. Back to Hebrews, the scriptures don’t merely encourage us to ‘consider rest’, its more of a command for us to “be diligent to enter that rest”. In modern day lingo, “make rest in Christ a priority”.

So let the ball drop, the clock tick, and the whole world keep moving- but YOU, my sister & Royal Daughter, “Be still, and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10.

Blessings to you this New Year! Looking forward to a NEW season, filled with new beginnings for each of us!
