How deep.

As I sat quietly in our good Friday worship service, I looked down at the little cup filled with grape juice and thoughts began to flood my mind. Questioning the deep deep purple-ish red color of the grape juice, I began to think of the depth of it all…. how deeply my sin cut the heart of Jesus… how deep the color of His blood was as He -without objection- paid the price of all my wrongdoings, and sin in this life… how deep the love God has for mankind, that He made a way for us to be one with Him…. how deep the grief and anguish all mankind would have had God not sent us salvation…. and as one thought came after another, this melody came to my mind:

How deep the Father’s love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son.
To make this wretch, His treasure.

How deep the Father’s love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
Praying the Lord brings each of our hearts to His precious cross this weekend, and experience the depth of His love poured over us.
